Suomenlinna Fortress
Spread across a cluster of islands connected by bridges, Suomenlinna is a massive sea fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Access to the island itself and exploring the vast fortress walls, green parks, and cobbled streets is entirely free of charge.
You can spend hours wandering through the historic tunnels, examining old cannons facing the Baltic Sea, and enjoying coastal walks with stunning views over the water back toward the Helsinki skyline. It is as much a bustling neighborhood (with around 800 permanent residents) as it is a historical monument.
During summer, it is incredibly popular for picnics, sunbathing, and watching the massive cruise ferries glide past a narrow strait next to the island. During winter, it turns into a quiet, atmospheric retreat from the city center.
